A great big open world

So college is over.  Now what?  There are so many things a new graduate can do with their new-found freedom.  There’s traveling abroad, taking some downtime for yourself or beginning a new career.  But what about going to school again?

This idea has become more and more popular upon new graduates over the years.  A study from Pew Research Center shows that millennials are far more likely to have at least a bachelor’s degree than the silent generation over 50 years ago.

There’s also the issue of when.  When is the best time to go back to school?  Everyone will give a different response.  Some may say take the summer off and begin in the following fall semester.  Others may say wait to establish yourself as a professional first.  Stephanie Gibbs, director of graduate admissions, said, “If a student knows what he or she wants and has a plan, they should go [to graduate school] right out of undergraduate school.”

Recent alumna Molly Fox is working in a marketing position for Pennsylvania Dental Implant and Oral Maxillofacial Surgery.  At this time, she has no plans of going to graduate school.  Fox did say that she wants to wait and see where her new job takes her and save up some money first.

“I would say to undergraduates to just enjoy your time and go on plenty of interviews.” -Molly Fox

Going into graduate school doesn’t just help you get a better, higher paying job.  There are many skills one learns that can be applied to their career.  “[When you have a master’s degree] it says you have time management skills and you are more focused,” Gibbs said.  “[It says] an employer doesn’t have to hold your hand in entry level jobs.”

Current Cabrini graduate student Camille Richards made the decision to further her education more than 20 years after receiving her bachelor’s degree.  In 1992 she earned her B.A. in political science, and in 1993 her B.A. in English literature.  Both degrees were received from Rosemont College.  “My current education at Cabrini has afforded me the opportunity to fine-tune my voice in my career discipline,” Richards said.

“It is important to explore and experience every opportunity.  Great opportunities can be found in the least likely places.” -Camille Richards

Gibbs says the earlier a student looks at graduate schools the better.  She’s even seen as young as sophomores at grad fairs.

Keep an eye out for upcoming Cabrini grad fairs.  Cabrini offers, to its undergraduates, a wave in the application fee and for the school to pull a student’s official transcripts.

Alumna Amber Marshall is holding off on graduate school.  She’s interested in seeing where her career can take her first.  Marshall is hoping that, if necessary, her company will pay for her continued education.  “After graduation is when life begins and everything gets a bit harder.  It’s important to remain driven and focused,” Marshall said.

“Listen to your professor’s advice and stay in touch with them after graduation.  They are a whole new level of networking opportunities.”  -Amber Marshall

When looking at schools, check at their rankings.  Once a student has found a graduate school, reach out to them.  Ask them where their students and alumni are.  That will give a pretty good idea what path life will lead.

The financial aspect of graduate school may be a turn-off for some.  There are graduate assistantships, and companies are even paying for further education.  According to a study by Pew Research Center, 98 percent of those with a higher education said their education was worth the investment.

Although many students talk about how much they can’t wait to be done with school, don’t close the door to any options just yet.  As Gibbs said, “If you have the tenacity, do it!”
