A single person’s guide to Valentine’s Day

Love is in the air! That’s right, it’s officially Valentine’s Day. Store isles are vibrant with pink plush items and heart-shaped everything. Many know this day as the end of “cuffing season,” as they have faced the cold winter months together and can now fully embrace the most romantic day of the year.

A day so full of romance may make single people dry-heave. The holiday has such a bad rap because people believe it is dedicated to couples. Many people also find it very unnecessary. They think it’s just another excuse for companies and stores to make money, a day that is way too over-commercialized. I personally, love love. I will be sporting pink and throwing valentines at whoever wants one. Well whatever your opinion may be, if you’re flying solo this holiday here are some ways to beat the pink and red day blues:

  1. Treat yourself

That’s right you deserve it! Get all the sweets you can eat. You want to go to a fancy dinner? Make yourself a reservation, and if you see some cool clothes you want, get them too. Feel like changing up your look and getting your hair done, why not? Do something nice for yourself, a little splurge won’t hurt. Be the best valentine you’ve ever had.

  1. “Galentine’s” or “Brolentine’s” Day

Getting together with other solos is a great way to spend a day. Whether you stay in or go out, you’ll be with the people who just get you, which can be helpful because you feel like every love-sick person does not. Maybe even get your friends something special as well. Who doesn’t like to see their friends happy?

  1. Have a movie marathon

Whether you want to feed in to the lovie-dovey vibes of the day with some Nicholas Sparks classics or want to binge the “Saw” movies, go ahead. There is something strangely comforting about having snacks and slowly starting to become part of the couch after not moving for several hours. It doesn’t have to be a solo movie binge, friends are welcome as well (see #2).

  1. Start a good book

How often do you actually get to read a book these days? Stop hate-scrolling through your news feeds at cute couple pictures, shut down your computer or phone and start turning those pages. Those Nicholas Spark movies were books first, ya know. So maybe living vicariously through romance novel characters could be a coping device.

  1. Get your heart pumping

Go to the gym, take a class or go on a hike and just clear your mind. Maybe even do something more risky (but still safe and follow the proper procedures) like rock climbing or bungee jumping. You’ll remind yourself how strong you are and will be energetic and ecstatic by what you have accomplished.

And if all the above fail just remember that chocolate will be on sale the next day, as well has many flower bouquets, so you’ll still get all the Valentine goods, but at a reasonable price! Celebrating love doesn’t have to be limited to just one day of the year. It should be celebrated every day! The day doesn’t have to be devoted to a significant other, it’s about showing appreciation to all loved one’s in your life, so spread the love!!!
