Are adult shows taking things too far?

Whether people like them or not, the odds of you having seen an episode of an adult show are rather high. Most people adore them thus being why they are so successful. Although not everyone agrees with what they stand for, the morality pictured in them and how they can affect the minds of a community.

The question is, are they taking things too far? Many people seem to think that adult shows should be allowed to do as they please.

“They should be allowed to say what they want and if people get offended, then they don’t have to make the choice to watch it,” Lexi Goldstein, sociology and criminology major at Cabrini University, said.

It’s understood that adult shows are not the most friendly to people who are easily offended. Most adult shows have a plethora of insulting jokes, and some people love them, but some people just can’t stand it. These people will most certainly let the shows in question have a piece of their mind. Sometimes the outcry is justified, and other times it seems close to pointless when a show’s offensive jokes are what makes it popular in the first place.

One could compare it to having a favorite soda. Someone might not like the taste of root beer, therefore they won’t drink it. The same can be said with adult shows. Some people hate Family Guy, and others love it. But those who don’t like Family Guy simply don’t have to watch it so they won’t get offended.

“Even if they do change their jokes, people will still get offended because you can’t please everyone.” Brooke Palmer, exercise science major at Cabrini University, said.

People are fickle, no matter what is done or said there will always, undoubtedly, be a sect of people who are offended or displeased. But in some cases there are times to show a sense of understanding. For a show to acknowledge when a joke has gone too far and attempts to right their wrong goes a long way.

The community of fans always seem to appreciates it and become more forgiving when this happens as well. A good example would have to be South Park as of recently.

South Park has recently apologized for one of their more notorious characters, ManBearPig, a character meant to symbolize climate change created 12 years ago. The reason for this character was to poke fun at Al Gore who at the time was working hard to warn about the dangers of global warming and how we should be concerned.

In a recent episode, “Time to Get Cereal,” the writers of the show made amends for their jokes about not taking climate change seriously. They had the characters on their show apologize to Al Gore, something the show is rarely known to do.

Though it was good that South Park apologized in this instance. Many people think that in regular scenarios where a show takes a joke a bit too far that they shouldn’t have to apologize.

“Personally, I don’t think think they should have to apologize for anything,” Nick Gavin, business management major at Cabrini University, said.  “The shows have ratings for a reason, you shouldn’t be watching the show in the first place without expecting some bad stuff.”

This is a factor many people seem to overlook when talking about the jokes in these types of shows. The demographic is for adults who should be able to handle these types of jokes. Some shows do take things a bit too far but with the ratings that the shows already have there should be no need for further warning.
