Early Monday, Jan. 21 Cabrini held a day of service in honor of the late Martin Luther King Jr. Students were able to make snack bag and care notes for families served by an organization called Face to Face in Germantown.

On Sunday afternoon Cabrini students received an email informing them of a service opportunity. “Celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr by taking some time to care for your neighbor. We will assemble snack bags with PBJ sandwiches, decorate the bags, and write a personal note to the bag’s recipient,” stated in the email sent on behalf of Raymond Ward, Interim Director of the Wolfington Center.

While this was not only a day of service it was also an opportunity for students to learn about Germantown’s historic past and their struggle with slavery, racism and oppression and how they can get involved.

The day started off with a presentation from the Germantown organization, Face to Face. The organization. “Face to Face is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) human services organization dedicated to the health, well-being and stability of our community,” says their mission statement, “Face to Face meets basic human needs and reduces suffering.”

After the presentations volunteers decorated brown paper bags and writing inspiring notes for inside the bags. Each bag would be filled with not just the notecard but also peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, granola bars, fruit snacks, and bottled water.

Freshman Raechel Aviles attended the event for the first time and couldn’t believe the impact she felt she was making.

“I chose to be a part of this day of service because I really believe in helping people experiencing homelessness, and I really believe that we can slowly help them back on their feet, and make their days better,” Aviles said.

Not only were there Cabrini students there but there were also prospective students who attended.

At the end of the day all those who volunteered felt like they had spent their day off the right way.

“We made a ton of bagged lunches and I feel that everyone at the event got the community service bug and now they want to continue to give back to the community more frequently,” Aviles said, “The event definitely sparked students to continue to give back, and it motivated people to start community service projects on their own.”
