Having a job while at college seems to be one of those things that’s apart of every “ways to survive college” article you see on the internet, and for a really good reason too, money. We need money to be able to buy the things we want and need like food, clothes, video games and make up.

There’s a variety of jobs out there for students to have but a lot of them seem to overlap. Think about how many college students you know that works in the mall at a retail store or waits tables at a restaurant. But there’s some students with some jobs, that are just really kinda odd, but cool!

Katherine Fiore, a junior mathematics major, works for a small company called Academic Careers Online where she helps advertise higher education jobs. She’s been working there since the start of the 2018-2019 school year and has had a great time since.

“I send emails to colleges across the country to get them to advertise their jobs through our website,” Fiore said. “I really like the job because it’s not too hard but is interesting since we’re doing some advertising. It also pays really well.”

There’s a lot of reasons to start working somewhere. Maybe you’re in it for the money, the experience or maybe because it’s something you just want to do.

“I started working at Dog Town because I really love dogs and being able to interact with dogs all day, and get paid? That’s a dream come true,” Samantha Gorman, a computer and information science major, said. Her job, Dog Town, is pretty much a doggy day care where customers can drop their dog off for a day of play and relaxation.

“I’ve been working at Dog Town for a little while now. I don’t really remember when I started but it was before college. It’s been a good time playing with and caring for other people’s dogs because dogs are just the best,” Gorman said.

When it comes to odd jobs however, it’s hard to come close to Joe Kramer who is an online writer working freelance. What doe he write about?

“So I essentially write stories for people about their fan theories and characters they like from popular fandoms. I get paid to write stories about Pokemon, Danny Phantom, Gilmore Girls and other stuff like that,” Kramer, a junior at Cabrini, said. “I started writing fan-fiction when I was in 9th grade and I eventually gathered a following since I was good at it. Then people started sending me money to write personalized stories for them, it’s kinda like a commission.”

Fan-fiction is the term used for when a writer takes characters and ideas from a certain media and creates a narrative of their own utilizing those borrowed elements.

“I write about a lot of things, usually it’s romance type things or action scenes, sometimes it’s a little on the weirder side. But hey, if they send you money, you write it,” Kramer said.

Jobs that you have in college are usually the ones you remember with funny stories, strange anecdotes and all sorts of associated banter.
