Although the weather may have been dreary, that did not stop supporting fans and parents from coming out to cheer on the women’s lax matchup of Cabrini taking on the Cedar Crest Falcons. Cabrini was able to dominate the conference game 14-1, and improve to an undefeated record of 3-0 in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play and 6-2 overall. With the loss on Saturday, Mar. 25, the Falcons dropped to 0-3 on the season.
In the first period, the Cavaliers fought hard against the Falcon’s tough defense and broke through on junior attacker, Sasha Wozniak’s, goal scored at the 27:55 mark, her 11th of the season. It was the the goal that opened the floodgates, kicking off a 10-0 first half for the Blue & White.
There was also a couple moments of great concern in the first half as the Falcon’s senior midfielder, Lauren Felix, sat out halfway through the first period due to twisting her knee.
“I was was trying to cut but my knee stayed where it was while I turned and it just happened,” Felix said. “I may have sat out during half the game but I’ll be back on my feet for the next game.”
Lauren Felix was not the only Falcon player who had it rough during the game, the Falcon’s senior mid-fielder, Regina Gill, took a cringe-worthy tumble halfway through the second period; an accidental trip by an opposing player which resulted in a two minute penalty for Cavalier’s player sophomore defender Marykate Keenan.
“It was a great game. Both teams did really well. I saw a lot of good plays by the Cavaliers which gave their team a great lead, and the Falcons had great defense,” Marie Breuning, a Cavalier fan, said.
Sophomore attacker, Avery Murphy’s, efforts in the win led to a tie in the season high for an individual this season with two. She also pitched in with two goals, which tied for a game-high with freshman attacker Lauren Hughes as well as sophomore attacker Liz Hoeffner. Eight other Cabrini players scored one goal. Eight Cabrini players also had multiple ground-balls, with Murphy leading the way with four. They scooped a total of 27 to 16. Cabrini won the draw control battle 15-2, and caused 15 turnovers to Cedar Crest’s six. Senior goalkeeper Megan Barlow earned her sixth win with the victory.
Cabrini’s next game will be at Swathmore College this Mar. 29, at 7 p.m.
“This win was no doubt another confidence boost for our team. It was a great game for us, I think we did a really great job. We won against Haverford, we won today, and we can’t wait for our next game,” sophomore mid-fielder, Emma Rodner-Tims, said. “We play Swathmore this upcoming Wednesday so we’re hoping for another win, but I’m confident in my team to pull out another game.”
