Can’t catch a break

What to do this winter break....

After finals for the fall semester, students get the opportunity to go home for winter break until the residence halls re-open on Monday, Jan. 18 and a new semester of classes begins. This is a time for students to rest and relax, spend time with friends and families and enjoy the holidays.

“This is the holiday season where students are for the most part asked to go home unless they have a reason that they really need to stay because home may not be an option for them,” Akirah Massenburg, assistant director of residence life, said.

However, not all students get the luxury of a month-long winter break. Some students must stay on campus for athletics, travel purposes or winter classes. Basketball and swimming are two of Cabrini’s athletics teams that will be having competitions and practices over the break.

Junior early childhood and special education double major Sarah Wagner will be returning to campus over two weeks before the end of her winter break. She has required practices for the swim team for which she must live on campus.

“It stinks, but I like to stay busy and our team gets very close during that time together,” Wagner said. “We need the practice and I would probably get bored at home anyways so I might as well be here swimming and hanging out with my teammates.”

Robbie Broch, a sophomore exercise science major, is taking the opportunity to take a winter class while on campus for basketball. He is not too upset about having to stay on campus because of the people he gets to spend his time with.

“I got my teammates to keep me company and they are my family so it’s pretty fun,” Broch said.

Students are not the only people who will be spending break on Cabrini’s campus. “All professional [residence life] staff members live on campus, so this is our home,” Massenburg said. “We do venture off-campus to go spend time with our families.”

Aside from the students who will be on campus for athletics, classes or travel reasons, resident assistants (RA’s) are also required to return to campus early for winter training.
