The defending CSAC champions Cabrini’s women’s field hockey team opened up their season Thursday night, Sept. 2, against Haverford College where they suffered a 3-2 loss.

As the two teams battled back and forth, Haverford had the beginning advantage when they opened up the scoring in the 12th minute of play. The Cavs came right back when number three, Maddy Worley scored in the 18th minute to tie it up at 1-1. With minutes left in the first half, Haverford took back the lead as they entered halftime up by a goal.

Haverford once again come out fast to start the half as they took a two-goal lead five minutes into the half. The second half was back and forth as no team was able to get the ball in the net. Cabrini had five shots and 15 penalty corners but were not able to capitalize until the 58th minute as senior Taylor Mack tried to start a comeback. Cabrini’s comeback came short as the horn sounded to give the Cavs their first loss of the season.

“We definitely played well,” Mack said. “This is our first official game and we lost seven seniors last year who were a big component of us, but people definitely stepped up today and I thought we all gelled well for our first game together!”

Sophomore Jackie Neary was a huge impact in the game as she had three shots on goal and took control on the field. After the game, she had nothing but positive feedback about her teams performance.

“I thought we all looked amazing tonight, but as the season goes on we’re going to get more familiar with each other and more comfortable on the field,” Neary said.

Head coach Jackie Neary entering her 21st season as leader on the bench was not thinking about too much on the future when asked where she sees this team at the end of the season. “I’m not going to make any predictions, I’m hoping we keep going in the right direction and today was a great start,” Neary said.

The Cavs look to get their first win of the season Saturday afternoon as they visit Montclair State University at 2 p.m.
