Freshmen take a look at their first year of college

As the year is quickly coming to an end, everyone is probably evaluating the time they have spent at school this year. The majority of these people are the freshmen. After their first year away at college, what do they have to say about their experience?

Criminology and sociology major, Maggie Javitt, talked about her first-year experience.

“I really liked living in East and being in an LLC,” Javitt said. “It created an easy way to connect and make friends.”

Javitt was one of the newest members of this year’s women’s tennis team. “My favorite memories all center around my fabulous teammates. They really helped make me feel at home and whenever the team is together, something memorable always happens,” Javitt said.  She also worked in the admissions office.

“I dated for a little bit, but realized I have no time to commit to a relationship. I’m not a big partier, but the instances where I have been in those circumstances have been really fun,” Javitt said. “Cabrini is the best of both worlds—small, yet big enough, tucked away in the woods but close to city life. So if a good mix of everything sounds right for you, then become a Cavalier.”

Danielle Brown, first-year biology major, spoke on her freshman year as well.

“I like all the new friends I made and all the activities they had on campus. My RA was awesome and my LLC was a great way to make friends with people who have something in common with you,” Brown said. “I didn’t like hearing about drama around the hall. Some people on the floor who weren’t in the LLC didn’t respect our group study hours and quiet hours.”

Brown felt her housing worked out perfect, despite being in a random room with random roommates. She is excited to be in a new environment next year, although being out of her close LLC hallway will be different.

“I definitely went home more and I think it was because I didn’t know anyone,” Brown said. “If I did stay, then we would watch movies, go into Philly, play board games or find ways to entertain ourselves.”

Brown is the co-social media chairperson for the Rotaract Club and is in the Math Club. She likes the department she is a part of as a biology major as well.

She highly recommends any prospective student to enroll at Cabrini.

“Definitely come. It’s a great school, and great campus,” Brown said. “It’s very easy to make friends here in such a close-knit community.”

Cecelia Heckman feels that she has found a new home in Cabrini.

“I am a Digital Communications and Social Media major and I absolutely love the communication department,” Heckman said. “All of the teachers are extremely passionate and helpful and truly care about the success of their students. I can’t wait to get more involved in all it has to offer.”

Heckman has done a lot in the way of being involved on campus. She is a member of the Honors Program, the freshman senator for student government, an Active Minds and theater member, she works in the Communications Department, Admissions and as a math classroom coach.

“I would tell a prospective student considering Cabrini that I would choose Cabrini 100 times over,” Heckman said. “My favorite part of my freshman year was my ability to get involved in so much so quickly. It definitely exceeded my expectations. I think the only hard part was figuring out who my good quality friends would be after meeting so many new people.”

Her least favorite part was getting written up.

“My housing situation was perfect,” Heckman said. “Being in the Honors Program, I live on the fourth floor of East Residence Hall with all of the other freshman honors students. My one roommate ended up becoming my best friend.”

If nothing else, a lot of freshmen agree that Cabrini gives them a sense of home.

“I think the best thing that Cabrini has to separate it from many other schools is its homey quality,” Heckman said. “I feel extremely safe and accepted on this campus at all times.”
