Intramural basketball at Cabrini University is a very popular activity to join among the students. On Thursday nights in February you will find the gym packed with many students playing on the court. The players even get a lot of friends to come out and show support. Teams are made with whoever would like to play.

The league really brings friends together in a competitive atmosphere. It also gives friends a reason to joke around and talk smack on each other for whoever played the best. It is a great opportunity to take advantage of while being at Cabrini.

There is no draft or anything like that. A group of friends get together and decide on who is best for the team. Some teams even take it to the extreme and will actually have an organized practice to get the squad up to par with other teams in the league. Players from Cabrini’s varsity basketball team volunteer to ref the games and it is usually well done. The players stay as the coaches of their teams. All of the teammates work together in order to sub players in and out of the game.

The league is also co-ed so you can even mix the teams up if you would like. There have been teams mixed with guys and girls that have done very well competitively in the league and have had a great time playing. This is a great opportunity for anyone who would also like to make some new friends in the process of playing in the league. Freshman have a great opportunity of meeting many new people if you want to meet new people around campus.

The director of the league is Jack Sanders, who is also a student at Cabrini University. Since intramurals do not start until February there is nothing definite about the rules and regulations yet. As it gets closer to the time for the games and sign ups to start then we will start to learn a lot more about what is going on. Jack Sanders gave us an overview of how the league usually goes down.

“Intramural basketball usually starts in February. It’s 5 against 5 but you can have subs. It’s co-ed, we’ve had all girls teams before. Last year we had an A bracket and a B bracket for those who wanted to play competitive vs those who wanted to play recreationally,” Sanders said.  “We usually have anywhere from 10-12 teams in the league. They’re on week nights, most likely after 8 p.m., it is a league so there is a full court championship with prizes, the varsity basketball refs it.”

It sounds like this year’s intramural league will definitely be one to participate in for anyone who wants to start a new team or any teams that want to redeem themselves after playing in the previous years.

“We coming for the chip this year! Can’t wait to get after it,” Logan Malin, who played last year, said.
