How young is too young?

16 is the age to get a license, and 21 is the age to drink, but what is the age to get married? Over the past 50 years marriages have changed greatly. It used to be that you would find a boy or girl, court them, date for a while, get married and then live the rest of your happy lives together.  Divorce and premarital sex were sins. Nowadays, it is a little different. Divorce has become a norm and people do not just have sex with the person they are going to marry anymore. In today’s world  marriages fail, but do they fail because of age?

There is no legal age to get married. The norm has changed, and people today are getting married later, establishing a career first before they take the plunge. In other cases, people marry young, as in high school or even college age.

But why is there a stigma behind getting married young and not one with getting married older?

The main concern is that young people are not emotionally, mentally and economically ready to be married. But is that all just statistics? Why should the economic standpoint of two people deter them from getting married if they are in love?

I believe that if two people are in love and they can see themselves having a life together, and they have talked about the future together, why should they not get married? In some cases, people married at a young age have more love and stay together longer than people who wait to get married.

I also believe that if you are young and you find the person who is right for you, why wait? If people wait for another “right one” to come around or wait until they are older, they could miss out on the person meant for them.

The truth is there is no right or wrong age at which to get married. People marry the people they can see themselves living with, having kids with and growing old with. There should not be a timer set to go off after people have been dating for however long. Sometimes soulmates find each other at the age of 16 or 18, while others find their soul mates at 45 or 50.

There is no telling what the future will hold with a spouse, but isn’t that half of the fun? Marrying someone means you can create your own future together.
