According to Cabrini Rec, “Our intramural basketball league is our most anticipated event of the year.”

The spring season is just about to start on campus, so that also means the school’s intramural basketball league is about to begin as well. All students with a competitive spirit come out with their teams to compete. Whether they are student-athletes or non-athletes looking to exercise, the tournament attracts a lot of different people.

There is a large number of students on campus. Students who enter the Dixon Center at night will see the gym packed with students playing basketball. This is where the idea to start an unofficial school basketball league began. It became so popular that, according to the Recreation Center, it is the most popular league.

“I want to play because I enjoy playing sports and hanging with my friends,” Jerry Healey, a sophomore accounting major, said. “It also gives me a chance to stay active and participate in campus activities.”

Intramural basketball started on Feb. 15 and will continue to the end of April. Games are played every Thursday from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

“We usually do this league every year and it dates back to before I even got here,” senior communications major Chris Fonte said. “It is our most popular event we hold on campus. It creates a lot of excitement for the students.”

Each team usually has one or two games a week. The league is not open to the public. Only Cabrini students are allowed to participate.

“We have nine teams in the league and each team has at least five members with a max of eight players on each team,” Fonte said

All students who have participated in the league have nothing but positive feedback. They have enjoyed the competitive aspect of the tournament and always enjoy themselves, regardless of it they win or lose. The league continues to grow and attract more and more attention as time goes on.

“There is nothing I would change about the league. I think the league is pretty fair and the rules aren’t that hard to follow, so no one usually breaks them,” Healey said

“I don’t have the time to participate in the team this year, but I think it’s something that should continue here at Cabrini,” Fernando Cornejl, sophomore psychology major, said. “There are a lot of students who don’t want to try out for the basketball team but still want to be active and this is a great way to involve them.”

For additional information on the guidelines for the tournaments see imleagues.com/cabrini. If you want more information on this particular tournament visit Cabrini Rec and look under upcoming events. Also, follow @cabrinrec on Twitter for up-to-date details and live tournament updates.

“Our intentions are just to get kids out there and involved and get a good workout in,” Fonte said. “It’s good for advertising other events we may have coming up. Since there are many events like this one, people always want to know what is coming in the future.”
