Caitlyn Jenner received Glamour’s Woman of the Year award and this has caused a controversy among many. Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Olympic medal winner Bruce Jenner, had a sex change to become a woman. I think this was an interesting decision to chose her to win this award. However, her winning the award is a step in the direction of people becoming more accepting of the transgender community. I think that people should be able to express themselves however they want and be whoever they want.

“I don’t believe she should have been awarded women of the year-not because she is transgender but because there are other a women who actually have achievements who deserve to be awarded for it instead of just becoming a woman,” senior Frances Mota said. “I also don’t think she is brave for coming, I believe it was all a publicity stunt for the Kardashian/Jenner family. Caitlyn Jenner shouldn’t be awarded for coming out as a woman; the women who achieve and break barriers and fight for our country should.”

Caitlyn Jenner is obviously not the first transgender woman, but I believe she is one of the first to have such high power to help make a change in the world and the views on transgenders. Being a part of the Kardashian clan puts her in a position to have a voice heard. Changing your sex is a hard process mentally, socially, physically and financially. I believe that it was a mixture of bravery and fame that helped her earn this award. Caitlyn is in such a big spot light and because of the constant attention and focus she has on her, it required more bravery for her to have a sex change.

“I believe Caitlyn Jenner won because of her fame. There are other transgender figures in the media such as Laverne Cox and Candis Cayne who receive very little fame compared to her,” senior Mia Lane said. “She is brave for her action but there are other women who receive little to no credit for their bravery.”

There are a lot of students who disagree with my opinion of her winning the award, however I still think by her being given this award, she is able to open so many eyes to learning about being a transgender. The idea of her winning shows to me that she was put in a position to stand up for transgenders. I also think that this was an opportunity to realize that if someone changes their sex, it is important to acknowledge them as their new sex and not just a transgender.
