Is spring break actually a break?

In the movies, spring break is among the most exciting times in one’s college career. The scene is always set on the beach, with music and alcohol, having the time of your life. In reality, spring break may not be what it is made up to be.

There are many different opinions on spring break that vary from, the timing of the semester break to, how long the break is to, receiving homework from your teachers over break. With the huge news traffic about climate change, the timing of the break could be a very interesting topic this year.

“I think spring break could be a little later when the weather is nicer,” junior Joe Fiore said. “That way people who aren’t going away could enjoy the time off with good weather.”

This year, the weather has been beautiful one day and welcomed by a winter storm the next.

Another discussion point that comes up in the planning of spring break is where Easter falls that year. Ideally, Easter break would be a good amount of time between spring and Easter break so the groove of the semester is not messed up.

“I think our spring break is at a good time when Easter falls in April because it really helps to break up the semester,” senior Amber Dietrich said.

At Cabrini, there is an Easter break for a few days that gives students the opportunity to step back from the class schedule dynamic and recollect themselves to finish the year strong.

Something that is out of the hands of the students is if teachers give out assignments to be done over break. This is something that is always left up to the teachers themselves because each one has their own unique way of getting things done.

“I think teachers don’t always follow the term ‘break’, as they usually give papers or tests to study for when we return from the study break,” Dietrich said.

Going back to Hollywood version of spring break, many students take this time to take a quick vacation to let off some steam that builds up through the semester. Senior Jatara Allen, is finally getting an opportunity to get away for a few days and taking a trip to Miami, FL with some friends.

“I never really got to experience the real thing. This is my first spring break actually taking a vacation. My roommates and I have planned this trip months in advance,” Allen said.

Regardless of feelings of where the break falls, the weather during the break or continuing the workload over this time, spring break is a time to step back and re-collect to come back recharged to do your best in the classroom.
