This year at the 51st annual NFL Super Bowl, Lady Gaga took the stage as the halftime show performer. Each year some of the biggest names in music take the stage to entertain the crowd during halftime. However, originally the halftime show consisted of marching bands and older music stars. The goal was to entertain those at the stadium as opposed to the viewers at home which is what it has turned into today.

In 1991, the NFL started to hire famous well known music stars to perform for the halftime show. The first band to play in 1991 was New Kids on the Block. The most recent performances have included Coldplay, Beyonce, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Missy Elliott and more.

Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, was born in New York City, New York in 1986. She released her debut album “The Fame” back in 2008, about a year after being signed to Interscope Records. Throughout the years, Lady Gaga has released six albums and has gone on six tours.

Lady Gaga started her performance off this year on the roof of NRG Stadium in Houston, TX, by singing a mashup of “God Bless America”, “This Land is Your Land” and the Pledge of Allegiance. When the song was over, Gaga jumped down to the field where she continued her performance.

“Lady Gaga’s performance was flawlessly executed,” Johnny Myers, sophomore English major said. “From the moment she flew down on the wires, I knew I’d be in for a treat.”

Other songs she performed were “Poker Face”, “Born This Way”, “Telephone”, “Just Dance”, “Million Reasons” and finished up the performance with her hit song, “Bad Romance”.

“I thought Lady Gaga was an amazing choice for the halftime show,” Katie Lebano, senior business management major at West Chester University, said. “While she is not only a great performer, her songs portray such positive messages about being yourself and embracing our differences.”

Throughout her performance, she had four outfit changes and drones surrounding the stadium. The drones shined red, white, and blue lights in the sky and at one point formed into the American flag. Lady Gaga’s backup dancers were dressed in black, silver and purple outfits and brought high energy to the show. Gaga ended her performance with a mic drop, followed by her catching a football and jumping out of the TV frame.

“I enjoyed [the halftime show]. She did a great job and it was an unforgettable performance,” Matt Keelan, sophomore business management major, said. “My only thing about it was that it was just a bunch of 2010 hits, so I felt that they should’ve picked a more current artist for the halftime show.”
