The road to victory

As the final few weeks of the winter basketball season wrap up, both men’s and women’s basketball teams are in preparation to play in their last conference games.

The women’s basketball team are 13-8 overall.

The men’s basketball team are 5-16 overall.

This year, they were both in a smaller conference which means they had the opportunity to play each team twice; once home and once away. Non-conference games they only play a team once a year.

“When you play a team twice a year you get much more familiar with them so therefore it’s harder to play. Also, it’s two times a year every year,” senior secondary education history major Mike Doyle said, “so by senior year, like where I’m at, I’ve played these teams 8 times (not including playoffs). Conference games are super impactful because that’s what matters for league playoffs.”

Women’s basketball

Cabrini’s women’s basketball won the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship for the fifth time in six years last season. Their goal is to win their first Atlantic East Championship, and repeat as conference champions. This year, women’s basketball has been working especially hard.

“We had a pretty difficult out of conference schedule in order to prepare us for some of the tough teams in our conference. Once conference play starts, games become more intense than non conference games,” sophomore early education and special education major Brianna Blair said.

The women’s basketball team is currently 8-0 for the conference. The women’s basketball team heads into their final weeks of regular season undefeated in the conference.

“We are extremely proud of how far we have come and we are excited for playoffs! Playing in a conference game is like playing for a championship trophy every game especially against Gwynedd Mercy University,” sophomore early education and special education major Ashley Tutzauer said. “All of the teams in the new conference is very talented and there have been great games so far. Every team is out to get Cabrini so we have to come out everyday, every practice, every game, and play Cabrini basketball until the final buzzer sounds.”

The men’s basketball team is currently 3-5 in conference play.

The men’s basketball team had a tough season, but also had some great wins. They beat Rosemont college by one on a buzzer beater. They also won against their top rival, Neumann University.

No matter the record before conference play begin, all teams had the same goal, and that’s to win a conference championship

“[Our mentality] going into conference play is we are ready to go,” sophomore secondary education and history major Tyler Timson said. “We don’t need any extra things to get us fired up because like I said we are fighting for a championship. It’s like a war night in and night out with every team. The fact also that there is no clear top team in the conference which makes every shot or rebound much needed.”
