Cabrini’s men golf team traveled to Moosic, PA the weekend of Oct. 20 to play in the Gino Biondi Memorial Tournament.

The team came in sixth place on Saturday and fifth on Sunday. Senior accounting major David Gall came up on top of Cabrini’s team with the best scores of 81 and 76, placing sixth in overall player rankings.

Preparing for the big weekend

Preparing for the tournament, Coach Tana Thomas says they practice almost every day to prepare for games and focus on players needs to help them improve.

“Some kids need to work on the range, some need to work on short game or putting and others just need to play as much as they can to get their scores reflecting their abilities,” Thomas said.

Practicing daily for an entire season is a lot of effort, but the short weekend is no match for the effort needed to reevaluate for the tournament.

“We reevaluate as we go and make adjustments for the long term changes that lower their scores,” Thomas said.

Freshman business management major Jonathon Papp says no matter it being a tournament, every time you play it’s different. You’re always reevaluating.

“Nothing is always the same so we start fresh every time we start,” Papp said.

Papp ranked 20th in the overall player rankings with scores of 87 and 84.

The weather was a prime factor in the success, or lack of, in the team.

“The wind on Saturday was brutal.  It was swirling and unpredictable.  On Sunday, it was freezing cold out.  It was a high of 40 with a real feel like below 30 all day,” Papp said.

Despite the harsh weather conditions, the team did well.

Even though their ranking was fifth and sixth, it was only out of eight.  Scores were close.

No matter the score, the team goes home happy. The team gets together and reflects on the game.

Coach Thomas explains why dinner when it’s all over is one of her favorite parts of a tournament.

“I love the dinner on the way home.  When all the kids compare notes, they don’t play together in the same groups, and talk about difficult holes or great shots they hit.  Sometimes it’s difficult to keep the guys positive but I love those team bonding moments,” Thomas said.
