It is half way through my first semester of sophomore year, and so far it has been a bumpy road. Coming into this semester, I had changed my perspective on how seriously I was going to focus on my grades, sports and the way I live my life.

I started to become more organized when it came to my school work. My time management skills were not the best during my freshman year, always staying up late to do homework or study at the last minute. As a result, I would miss classes because I would over sleep or my grades on assignments would show up as failures. This semester, I use Post-It Notes to help me with my organization by writing my assignments or meetings on a certain amount of notes, then placing them on top of my desk.  So far, the method has helped me stay on course to be very successful in my classes. Even with some classes beginning to give more work as the second half of the semester begins, you should stay focused and surround yourself with people that will help you with your school work and show you how to overcome the struggles of being unorganized.

With all the fall sports coming to an end and the beginning of preseason winter sports among us, I had the opportunity to go out for the Cabrini men’s basketball team for the second time. Coming into this season, my goal was the same (to be on the team), but how I went about working at it was different. I had to change up my eating habits and cut down on partying, as I decided to stay focused and in shape. I had to learn to actually stay away from the late nights going to the Rac or ordering Campus Corner every weekend.

This semester, the Dixon Center has literally become my second home; I am in the gym every day trying to get stronger and more in shape for the season. Unfortunately, I did not make the basketball team, but my hard work and dedication to the game has gotten me the recognition of the coach, which has actually made me want to work even harder because when God closes one door, He will open another one.

As we continue into this long grinding semester, the one piece of advice that I would give to anyone is this: be different and separate yourself from others if you want to become successful.
