In Founders Hall at Cabrini University, students and faculty members gathered for a visit from Widener University Delaware Law School where they conducted a mock trial. The trial was lead by Dean Rod Smolla who presented a case to the students who acted as a court and presented questions to Smolla about the case leading to a final decision vote of the case by the students. This simulation gave students a visualization for what classes at Widener University Delaware Law School would be like.

“I’ve been considering law school after I graduate for a little while now, so the information about admissions was very helpful,” Carla Solano, junior political science and English major, said. “The mock trial was a good way to present the complexity that most law cases have.”law-school-article

The Widener University Delaware Law School offers programs for students wanting to go to law school and allows for easy transitions from school to school. The partnership Cabrini has with the school involves two programs – a 3+3 program where Cabrini students attend Cabrini for 3 years and then attend Delaware Law for 3 years, earning both degrees in 6 years instead of 7 and a guaranteed admissions program for Cabrini students and graduates.  Both programs require a 3.0 undergraduate grade point average (UGPA) and a Law School Admission Test (LSAT) score that meets or exceeds the median LSAT of the most recent Delaware Law entering class.

The Widener University Delaware Law School also offers a program called the Jurist Academy which gives students the opportunity to explore the ideas of going into the field of law to see if it is a right fit for two weeks.

“At Delaware Law School we have had many students come through our program and succeed,” Barbara Ayars, assistant Dean for admissions at the Delaware Law School, said. “The Delaware Law School has seemed to be a continuous great fit for Cabrini students.”

If Cabrini students have questions about going into law school, a knowledgeable person on campus to talk to is political science and history professor, Dr. James Hedtke.  He is also the pre-law adviser at Cabrini. He advises students of all majors, not only political science and history but those who are interested in going to law school as well.

“Advice I would give to students interested in going to law school is first to keep your GPA up,” Dr. James Hedtke, said. “If you think you’re interested in law, come to see me and we can discuss your plans. Also consider taking a course or two at Cabrini that is somehow related to the law which will help in your decision of going to law school or not.”

When deciding on a future career in law, obtaining internships in private practice and public practice will help guide a student in their decisions and also help them to gain experience.

“The law is nothing like you see on TV so you want a real hands on experience to understand what it is to be a lawyer.” Hedtke said.
