Students all over college campus’s are either slacking off or kicking it into gear because another year of college is coming to an end. With the weather finally getting warmer and summer right around the corner, students have been itching to be done with the constant work loads.

Senioritis is a common term known by many but what about the sophomore slump?

“In my opinion, sophomore slump is when you lose effort on your assignments and find yourself doing more poorly on assignments and ending with an overall GPA lower than first year/semester,” sophomore Nicole Rossi said.

“I feel like there’s a slump during every year,” sophomore Mariah Sessoms said.  “Towards March, students get tired of assignments, especially papers and I feel like we don’t put our ‘all’ into every assignment because we’re just ready to be done with school with that year. The thought of summer is kind of in a way motivating to do my schoolwork so my summer break can begin.”

“I think the weather definitely plays a part in attendance this time of year. Especially on nice Friday afternoons, no one wants to be in a classroom,” Brittany Runyen said. “I always use summer as motivation to get my work done, and to do it well. I don’t want to look at my grades over the summer and be disappointed. I want to make sure that when I’m done for the year I’m proud of my work.”

Staying focused on finishing  with good grades and continuing to hand in assignments on time towards the end of the year is common.

“All my friends are suffering from sophomore slump. The slump is very contagious! But it’s nothing to be ashamed about,” Mariah Sessoms said. “Sophomore slump is normal to me. Everybody gets to the point where they’re tired of doing stuff over and over again.”

Some students feel that being in their second year of college has helped them feel more confident with doing assignments and keeping on top of things. They know what it takes to be successful, it’s just a matter of doing what needs to be done.

“I haven’t really had any problems with completing my work in my second year. It’s just some days where I get tired and may procrastinate 2 or 3 days before the assignment is due,” Mariah Sessoms said. “The hardest part of staying on track is seeing other schools get out before us.”

“Especially since I’m halfway done my years of undergrad, I find myself having difficulty staying on task and getting my assignments done in an efficient manner. It’s a bit of a struggle to sit in a classroom all day when the weather outside is gorgeous,” Nicole Rossi said. “As summer is right around the corner, the thought of it makes me want to finish my work as soon as possible because that means I’m a step closer to three months of no schoolwork.”

“I actually think I’m doing better in my second year of college. There aren’t as many new things to get used to in the second year, so there’s less pressure and things become more natural,” Brittany Runyen said. “My time management has definitely gotten better this year too. The sophomore slump doesn’t have to affect everyone. As long as you can keep your motivation going and remember what you’re working for you can do it.”
