Students get excited for summer

As the days get sunnier, warmer and brighter, many students are starting to think about what they want to do while they are not at school.

Nazifa Akanda, criminology and sociology double major, is very excited about the upcoming summer break.

“I’m excited for the summer, but I know I will be very preoccupied with school, work, and having a social life,” Akanda said.

For some, they will head to Florida or to the beach to soak up the sun with friends and family, but that is not the case for everybody.

Elizabeth Stauffer, the testing coordinator for the Disability Resource Center, has other plans. “For three weeks I will be mentoring cancer patients at a camp called Camp Make a Dream in Montana,” Stauffer said. “I’m mentoring two team camps, one for young adults and one for kids ages 12-18. I like Montana because it is peaceful and completely different from this area. I like seeing old faces, and meeting new people and seeing what they have been up to.”

Stauffer will also be sight seeing with a friend.

“Last year I went to Yellowstone National Park with a friend who lives out there. I will also be getting my masters degree at Cabrini in August,” Strauffer said.

Andrea Gerardi, junior elementary education major and special education minor, said, “I’m supper excited for summer break being right around the corner because I can be away from schoolwork and around my family. I live in New York, I am excited to go back there and spend time with my family and friends. I work in an elementary school called Corpus Christi Holy Rosary School in Port Chester, New York. I do the after care program and the summer program for May, June, July and August.”

Gerardi is also excited to go to Florida with her family. She will be visiting a friend in St. Pete’s in Disney World.

“I am also looking forward to going home for all the family barbecues and going to the beach. I usually go to Jones beach in Long Island or we go to Atlantic City or Wildwood,” Gerardi said.  “A lot of my friends had gone to the Bahamas and Cancún over spring break so some of them are going back for the summer.”

Nazifa Akanda said, “I’ll be taking graduate prep classes over the summer. I’ll be taking LSAT prep courses, which is the entrance exam for law school. It took me a while to realize I wanted to go to law school, but I want to do it because when I was born, one of my aunts had said that I was going to law school, and then I ended up liking it. I really like criminology because it showed me the criminal aspect of law.”

Akanda, also said, “I will probably be going to the beach a lot. I went to three different beaches last year; I really liked Wildwood and the beaches in Atlantic City. I plan to hang out with friends over the summer time and also work to earn money.”

The common theme for many students this year seems to be going to Florida or the beaches to relax and have fun. Some students also seem to be going to the beaches in New Jersey, Cancún and the Bahamas over the summer.

Akanda said, “I love going to the beach because of the water and the atmosphere. The beach makes me feel so much happier.”
