During summers, college students can commonly find themselves with extra time on their hands. They go from having class five days a week, to all of a sudden, being able to do whatever they want.
There are many ways in which students find themselves spending their summer depending on who they are and what interests them. Most of them turn to summer jobs to keep busy or an internship.
“I had a job this past summer at indoor swim school in Mount Laurel, N.J. I was teaching young kids how to swim from ages one to 12-years-old,” junior Nicolette Murabito said.
There are some students that take this off time as an opportunity to study abroad.
The summer can be a good time for going abroad because students can potentially be in nicer weather depending where they travel to. Also, they can get more credits out of the way to help them stay on track for graduation or get ahead.
“This past summer I took my free time to study abroad in Ireland,” senior Jamie Rufo said. “I was really excited about doing my study abroad over the summer because then I didn’t have to miss a regular semester with my friends.”
Although some of them may be working a regular job, there are still skills they can learn that will further their success in a specific major.
The desire to make money to put towards the next school year always helps drive the students towards getting a job. It is a goal of many students to get a summer job that pays and helps them with skills they will need for a future career they are headed towards.
“I had a summer job to keep myself busy and to save money for the school year,” Murabito said. “I enjoyed the job a lot and learned a lot with the kids. This job was really good for me this summer because my major is early education and special ed and I was dealing with young kids and kids with special needs.”
There are some students that do the same summer jobs that they have been doing for years. However, there are people who love the excitement of change and trying something new.
“Studying abroad in the summer was a really great thing for me,” Rufo said. “I usually have a lot of free time that I spend at the beach and with friends, but it was nice to have a change.”
