The struggle is real for Philadelphia sports teams

Philadelphia sports teams have let down their fans tremendously in 2015. The Phillies finished last in their division this season. The Sixers, Eagles and Flyers have not one home win between them in the entire month of November.

“It’s very hard to be a Philadelphia sports fan currently with all teams doing so badly,” Ian Kelly, a political science and history major, said. He believes that the poor season for the teams comes from poor coaching.

“I personally think the Sixers need the most help, but I would like to see the Eagles excel and win a Super Bowl at least once,” Kelly said. When asked what they needed to do in order to become a threat in their division Kelly gave some very detailed instructions.

“In order for the Eagles to get better and become a threat in the NFL, they need to fire defensive coordinator Bill Davis. Head coach Chip Kelly needs to draft a young O-lineman and a mobile quarterback that can run high octane offense,” Kelly said.

Trisha Stocker, sophomore education major, personally cares more about how the Sixers are doing.

“The Sixers are in deep trouble because their team lacks the experienced players it needs. The team right now is not playing like a NBA team should, the players aren’t focused on the team as a whole,” Stocker said. “This past year I haven’t watched many games because I know what the outcome will be disappointing.”

The losing streak of the Philadelphia sports teams has even caught the attention of non-Pennsylvanians.

“I usually root for the New York Yankees or Mets, since I am from New York City,” Rita Alcaraz said. “I guess it is a good thing that the Phillies are not a threat to the NY Yankees or Mets. At the same time and at the end of the day it is just a game to me.” She also takes a more lighthearted approach to the world of sports.

“I feel like putting this much importance into a sport, like over glorifying it, is not that necessary but it is a good time consumer or a form of entertainment,” Alcaraz said. Alcaraz is not complaining about the Sixers being down on their luck either, anything to help her team the New York Knicks.

“For the Eagles to become a playoff team again they should, look into firing Chip Kelly from the team and start looking to rebuild the organization with faster stronger players,” Vince Alimo, freshman business major, said. “The Philadelphia Flyers, my NHL team that I root for, make it hard to support them when their track record isn’t good. Each team has at least one major problem that needs to be addressed.”
