Why your education at Cabrini is one of a kind

My last three years at Cabrini have been filled with tears. Tears of happiness, sadness and strength. As I walk down the aisle to receive my degree, all three of those emotions will come together as I remember everything Cabrini has given me.

But the most important part that Cabrini has given me was their dedication to giving an education with purpose. I commend the professors who tirelessly work to positively mold a freshman’s mind to think about the social injustices in our world and how we can find solutions for them. I thank my educators for pushing me to do meaningful work and offering me all the opportunities to succeed when I leave this campus.

Cabrini’s education is a diamond in the rough. A small university settled back in the woods of Radnor, Pa., started by the steadfast Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Their mission was an education of the heart and Cabrini continues these core values today.

From handpicking professors that have an innate passion to help others, to creating students with a strong work ethic and a global view, Cabrini delivers what they promise.

I recently had the opportunity to intern with a wonderful company as their marketing intern. I found them after hours and hours of sifting through positions online. I showed up for my interview, portfolio in hand and a nervous smile on my face. They told me I was the first Cabrini student to ever apply and that they mostly had Villanova interns. They asked who referred me to this internship. I told them I found it myself.

This is because of my education. Cabrini teaches their students to work hard and to stay humble. Our biggest asset is that we might not be as popular as some other schools in our area, but we are impactful. Special. One of a kind.

As a communication major, I was ready to show off my articles I had written for The Loquitur, my lobbying speech when I went to Congress in D.C. to support development assistance, climate change and refugees. I explained to them how I developed a global view of world issues because of Cabrini. I showed them my online portfolio of videos and my hands-on work with creating a newspaper as well as my certifications I received through my classes.

The people who interviewed me were pleasantly surprised. I was told no one had ever brought in a physical portfolio to showcase their work during college. I knew I had to tell my professor that his constant nagging about creating a good portfolio paid off.

I received an email later that day offering me the position. I was praised for my personable nature but especially for how diverse and practical my education was.

I graduate with 500 other people in two weeks who have received the same distinguished education that gives us that edge in our fields. We should be proud. Honored to say Cabrini helped us to live with purpose as we go on to fulfill our own goals and aspirations.

As we look at each other in our cap and gowns, wondering how we made it through those all nighters, senior projects and the hangovers to follow, we must not forget the people that brought us to May 21, 2017.

Thank your professors who continuously pushed you to do better, who supported you when you were at your lowest, who will watch you with bittersweet emotion walk across that stage to start the rest of your life. Thank you Cabrini.
