Women’s basketball falls short 61-63 against Marywood

Cabrini’s loss against the Marywood Pacers marked their first loss in the Colonial States Athletic Conference this season. The loss drops them to 8-1 in CSAC play and 10-8 overall.

The game started off fierce with Cabrini winning the tip-off and forward Myonie Williamson (#14)  scoring after an assist from forward Nomi Washington (#20). Marywood answered back with a two pointer of their own. The score stayed tied 2-2 for three minutes as a result of multiple misses from both squads.

Marywood broke the tie with a good two-pointer from their guard making the score 4-2. Washington managed to come up with a steal and took it in for a layup tying the game back up 4-4. With less than four minutes left in the quarter Washington manages to get a steal again and passes it to forward Renee Oliver (#11)  for a two-pointer.

The Pacers immediately responded with a three-pointer. Marywood finished the quarter with a basket and went into the second quarter with the lead 14-11.

The game continued to be close throughout the second quarter with Cabrini only trailing 2-5 points in the quarter. The Cavaliers managed to bring the lead within two with a layup from forward Megan Matthews (#33). The Pacers pushed their lead back up to four ending the half 27-23.

Marywood came out the half with a mission as they continued to push their lead over the Lady Cavaliers. At one point during the quarter the Pacers lead by a game high of 12 points. The Cavaliers was able to stay within 10 points by the end of the quarter with the score being 45-37.

The Cabrini Cavaliers was not going to let Marywood easily walk away with the win. They came out of the quarter and managed to get fouled by the visiting team within the first minute. Guard Erin Dodds (#30) sunk both free throws in, narrowing the lead down to six.

With 8:03 left in the very last quarter of regulation, Williamson found a way to get open for a jumper after another assist from Washington. This was Washington’s fourth assist at this point of the game. Despite trailing for most of the game, the Lady Cavs was not going down without a fight. Guard/forward Kate Skalski (#25) nailed a clutch three pointer and closed Marywood’s lead down to just three.

With a minute left in the game, Cabrini found themselves down by 8. Washington took matters into her own hands and made a nice layup. The Lady Cavs immediately fouled to send one of the Pacers to the free throw line and they managed to sink them both.

Washington again found her way to get open for a jumper, scoring again. Cabrini continued to foul after every possession, hoping that one of the Marywood players would miss. With 21 seconds left in regulation Dodds sunk a three-pointer off of another Washington assist, bringing the Cavs within 2 for the first time since the second quarter.

Cabrini caused a turnover 0n the defensive end and had the ball for the final 18 seconds of the game. Cabrini tried to get a basket before the final buzzer but Marywood locked down on defense which caused Washington’s last shot to miss.

Despite the tough loss Washington led the team with 14 points and 8 assists. Williamson was close behind her with 11 points.

The Lady Cavs will be back on the court on Jan. 25th against Immaculata University.
