Women’s golf to become 19th sport at Cabrini University

Another sport has been added to Cabrini University’s athletic program. Women’s golf will be making its way to Cabrini this upcoming 2017-2018. The men’s golf team was started back in 1987 and has won four CSAC championships up into present day and now there will be an opportunity for the women of Cabrini to start their own legacy.

The team will face primarily local competition and play in tournaments, much like our men’s program. The difference between the men’s and women’s team is set to be independent as it will not be sponsored by the Colonial States Athletic Conference like the men’s team. Women have competed on the men’s team in the past, so it is fitting that they now are able to have a team and identity of their own.

Associate director of athletics, Kate Corcoran said, “The Department of Athletics is in the investigative phase of adding more sports and we have had three girls already participating on the men’s golf team so it made sense to offer for the women. This sport will start this fall in 2017, and will be planned out just like the men’s team. It will be the same as other sports, interested athletes can contact the athletics department and we can walk them through the process. They will play in the same season as the men with competitions in both the fall and spring seasons.”

“Our goal for this new addition is for our student-athletes to compete in a competitive athletics program and retain a full spectrum of college life,” Corcoran said.

Senior player Ally Fiorelli competed in the first ever CSAC Women’s Golf Invitational this past April. The 2016-17 golf slate also includes four women’s invitationals, as well as the second CSAC Women’s Golf Invitational.

David Howell, athletics communication director said, “From what I understand we’ve had women on the golf team for several years, and I think it’s another way to help Cabrini athletics grow, and add more opportunities for our female student athletes.” Howell said there have been events played where they were co-ed, or women’s events that are tied in with men’s events. “I think it’s a natural progression to create their own program,” Howell said.

This is the third sport that has been added to the system in three years, and the directors are not sure of anymore upcoming ones. “I think we need a little more time before we try and set up a new oncoming sport to add to our list,” Howell said. “Based on the different departments and the university itself, I do foresee additional sports coming, I just don’t think it will be anytime soon.”

“From an SID perspective and a very big fan of Cabrini athletics, I would just hope that we can give the students athletes another opportunity to enjoy being a part of the athletic program,” Howell said. “I hope that we can give the women an opportunity to play competitive golf and have the same experiences as the men do. To be able to say you have your own team and program is great, and I hope the women get to have that title.”
