Cabrini College’s student government association hosted its third annual three vs. three basketball tournament Tuesday, Oct. 13.  The event, which was posted throughout campus and on Facebook, gained a lot of popularity when six teams decided to sign up.  Groups of five with a love of basketball and competition were encouraged to participate and join in on the fun.  Free water and pretzels were given out to the seventy players and over a hundred students who came to cheer on the players.

The college radio station, WYBF-FM, was on hand for the event, and cameras were out to capture the fast-paced games.  Emily Janis, who is an SGA member, said, “It was really successful!  There were a lot of people in attendance and it was exciting watching the game.”

The teams gathered around the court at 8:45 p.m. and from there, the games began.  People who were working out in the gym came to support and even participate in the tournament, giving this event a successful turnout.

“It has become a tradition since the first homecoming week and we enjoy putting on an event to reach out to students,” SGA president, Lucia Neuber, said.

As the tournament went on, the fans cheered and tensions rose.

Teams were competing for the prize of free t-shirts and the camaraderie that comes with winning.  Sophomore, Giorgio Courtis, joined in on the excitement with the help of fellow sophomore, Christopher Fonte.  Courtis signed up to play and ended up making it to the semifinals of the tournament.  “The tournament was fun!  My team went 2-2 and was led by coach Fonte.  It was a great time,” Courtis said.  As the tournament neared its end at 10:30 p.m., it was the team with the best basketball experience that won the whole game.  Some members of the team, Vincent Walls and Vernon Robinson, reveled in their successful night as the other teams without the win dispersed to still celebrate the entertaining night.
