An unpredictable year, but a not so unpredictable Super Bowl

Although many events looked different this past year, one thing that felt the same was the Super Bowl. In February of 2020, Tom Brady announced that he was moving on from the Patriots in the early off-season despite knowing what team he would end up on. Brady’s decision was down to the Chargers or the Bucs and on March 20 he made his move to Tampa Bay official. Brady leaving the Patriots went down as another historic event in the year 2020.

Maria Alexandrowicz, Athletics office specialist, says she had no idea what the outcome of the game would be. “I wanted the Bucs and I was predicting they would win. I was just expecting a better game,” Alexandrowicz said. “I thought Brady totally deserved the MVP. He is an incredible team leader and for his age, it is still so unbelievable to me how he led a totally different team to the Super Bowl.”

David Howell, athletics communications director, was not surprised at the outcome of the game either. “I really was expecting a better game even though I was hoping the Bucs would win. I did not think the Bucs would have as good a defense as they did and I definitely thought the chiefs would be able to score more easily,” Howell said. “ Brady deserved MVP a 100% even though all of the Bucs had worthy defense it was hard to pick.”

As we all know the super bowl is not just watched for the love of the football game. A very big part of the night is the pure entertainment of the commercials. For the first time in 37 years, Budweiser did not release a commercial during the Super Bowl due to COVID-19. Budweiser instead focused on promoting vaccine awareness and distribution efforts as well as the ideas of togetherness and connection throughout this whole pandemic. “I thought it was really cool that Budweiser sacrificed advertising for their brand on the biggest night of the year,” Alexandrowicz said.

“My favorite commercial I think was the 3D Dorito commercial,” Alexandrowicz added. “That was a big thing back in the 90s and it was very nostalgic to me and I am excited they are back.”

As a father of a young daughter, it was hard for Howell to pay much attention to the commercials. He was so focused on the game the commercial breaks were his time to focus on his daughter. “I did not pay much attention to the commercials but one that stuck out to me was the M&M one and how you should apologize to someone and give them M&M’s I thought it was funny and the M&M commercials always make me laugh,”  Howell said.
