Cabrini basketball sweeps Neumann in double header

Cabrini University men’s and women’s basketball teams swept in a double header at Neumann University on Feb. 1, 2020 at Cabrini University. 

The first game of the double header was played by the women’s basketball team at 1 p.m. The Cavaliers looked to extend their conference winning streak to seven in conference victories. Previously, the Cavaliers defeated the Neumann Knights at Neumann on January 8, 2020 with a final score of 76-49. 

The Cavaliers were quickly able to pull ahead of the Knights in the first quarter, gaining a seven point lead over the Knights with 4:08 remaining in the first quarter. The Knights began to catch back up, bringing the score to 9-10 with 2:18 on the clock. However, the Cavaliers rallied and finished the first quarter off with a score of 19-9. 

The second quarter saw a very similar performance from the Cavaliers, pulling ahead by 10 points with 4:57 remaining in the first half. The Cavaliers were able to then maintain a minimum of a 10 point lead over the Neumann Knights for the remainder of the half, finishing the first half with a score of 35-19. 

After halftime the Cavaliers came back and continued to increase their lead over the Knights, gaining a 25 point lead over Neumann with 8:21 still remaining in the third quarter. The Cavaliers successfully held a strong lead over the Neumann Knights for the remainder of the third quarter and go into the fourth quarter with a score of 54-34. 

The Cavaliers maintained the lead over the Neumann Knights through the fourth quarter, defeating Neumann with a final score of 67-44. With this victory of the Neumann Knights the Cavaliers improved their record to 15-5 overall and 7-0 in conference.

In the middle of the fourth quarter junior Kate Lannon became the 13th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. Lannon also led the Cavaliers in points with 17 points, as well as tallying eight rebounds and three assists. 

The second game of the double header against Neumann was played by the Cabrini University men’s basketball team. The Cavaliers wanted to increase their win streak to four games, with three of those games being against conference opponents. Previously the Cavaliers lost to the Neumann Knights on Jan. 8, 2020, with a final score of 49-65. 

The first half of the game saw an exciting back-and-forth match. The Cavaliers and Knights kept the score close throughout the first half with neither team increasing their lead to more than five points. Junior Justin Gans led the Cavaliers in the first half with 15 points. The Cavaliers went into the second half of the game with a score of 40-38. 

The second half of play starts and the Cavaliers quickly start to pull ahead of the Neumann Knights, gaining a seven point lead over Neumann with 18:17 remaining in the game. For the next several minutes the scoring remained close with the Cavaliers and Knights each pulling ahead by two or three points. However, the Cavaliers rallied with a layup from senior Keith Blassingale and two good free throws from senior Jarren Abad giving the Cavaliers a seven point lead over the Knights with 8:35 remaining. The Cavaliers were then able to hold there lead over the Knights and finish the second half with a final score of 87-76.
