Coaches and their relationship with alumni

“Sometimes it’s hard losing a star player,” coach Steve Colfer said. Last year Colfer and the Cabrini men’s lacrosse team won the national championship. Coach Colfer had star player Jordan Krug lead the way in the Cavaliers’ run to the championship.

“It’s hard. They’re always busy and trying to get used to the real world,” Colfer said.“They sometimes don’t get back to you when you call.”

“When we talk over the phone we have good long talks, sometimes up to 45 minutes,” he said. “Ever since he got drafted by the Philadelphia Wings in the NLL draft, he is always busy. Too busy for me.”

Last year the Cabrini men’s basketball team struggled with a finishing record of 6-20 and getting bounced in the first round of the playoffs. They lost Ivan Robinson who was their starting point guard for five years.

“I talk to Ivan every day,” coach McDonald said. “Sometimes we even go meet for brunch.”

Tyheim Monroe was the National Player of the year for Cabrini men’s basketball in 2017-2018. Losing him the basketball team took a huge hit.

“Tyheim and I were very close,” coach McDonald said.“I still talk to him to this day.”

Tyheim Monroe plays professional basketball overseas in Brazil, coach McDonald said.

“Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with him. He’s busy with workouts and games,” McDonald said. “Sometimes he doesn’t even call or text me back.”

“I still watch his games and would even love to go see him play sometimes,” he said.

“I’ve coached at a lot of players,” Bill Wiley said. With more than 25 years of coaching experience, he has a lot of players to keep up with once they’re gone.

“I’m busy with work and then coaching but whenever I can I love to meet up with some of the guys I coached,” Wiley said. He said he loves it when they call him or text him to check on him. “Sometimes I run into them at the store or if I am out and about,” he said.

I love it when I see some of my old players, we sit there and talk for a good long time, he said. “Plus I love when I see their girlfriend or wife, and kids if they have some,” he said.

“It just shows me how much they’ve grown up and turned into men,” Wiley said. “It’s really mind-blowing how you coach these guys from when they’re just 18 years old, a freshman in college and you see them grow,” he said. “You see these guys mature and start life while starting their own family, “coach Wiley said.

“I also see a lot of them at the alumni game that Cabrini hosts every year so that’s a great time to catch up with a lot of those guys,” he said.

“I hate seeing my seniors off but I love it at the same time because they’re going into the real world,” Rob Dallas, men’s soccer coach,  said. “I still text some of my players to this day.”

“Sometimes they’re busy with work and their families but we still talk,” he said. “I don’t really get to see a lot of them as much as I wish I could but I am happy. I get to text or talk to them over the phone, “coach Dallas said.
