Is the price right in The Grill?

Along with the name change this year, Cru5h, now known as “The Grill,” has also seen an increase in prices.

After Cabrini had changed the dining options for the 2019-2020 school year, the price of the food increased. Therefore, the university had changed the meal plan for students, increasing the price of a meal swipe to $6 dollars from the previous $5.25.  A student living on campus has the option to choose 19 meals per week with $100 in flex, or 14 meals per week with $200 in flex.

Almost anything you purchase in The Grill will cost you more than a meal swipe and will withdrawal from your flex account during each scan.

The Grill offers breakfast until 10 a.m. which includes breakfast sandwiches and eggs, lunch includes sandwiches from grilled cheese, cheeseburgers, cheesesteaks and a fish sandwich. It also has salads, including salads where you can create your own, sides such as a fruit cup, mozzarella sticks, tater tots and onion rings.

The Grill also offers snacks, including chips, candy, Ben and Jerry’s ice cream and Panera products.

Panera products come with Panera prices. For example, soup costs $5.99, practically a whole meal swipe. The soup only has 16 ounces, which is definitely not a meal for most college students.

The mac ‘n cheese is $4.99 and is 10 ounces.

Ben and Jerry’s ice cream cartons sell for the price of $6.70 in The Grill. That is more than one whole meal swipe.

Brooke Conlin, sophomore marketing major, said that she believes that the ice cream is over priced. “I know that while going to a normal store the price is generally going to be the same at Wawa or a supermarket. However, I don’t believe a lot of students want to be paying over $6 for ice cream on campus,” she said.

A consistent trend in The Grill is that healthier options are more expensive. For example, a grilled chicken Caesar salad is $7.15. Five fried chicken tenders is $5.99. A popcorn chicken salad goes for the price of $6.95, while a cheeseburger is only $4.99. A side of a fruit cup cost $4.09 while tater tots are almost $2.00 cheaper at only $2.89.

Conlin said that she knows that healthier options are always going to be more expensive no matter where you go. “I don’t agree with how expensive the healthier options are at The Grill because in my opinion, they aren’t worth the money. Every time I go there, there is always a problem with my order or they are out of something I want,” she said.

The meals that are offered range from $3.99-$6.99.

Ordering a grilled cheese, fish sandwich, a hot dog or three chicken tenders will cost you $3.99.

If you are looking to get good use out of your whole meal swipe, make sure to snag a burger combo, cheese steak or chicken cheesesteak and a chicken quesadilla ranging from $6.00-$6.99.

Sides for your meal range from $2.89-$5.99, mozzarella sticks being the most expensive.

Snacks including chips, candy, guacamole, cheesecake and amongst other things, will have a price tag between $1.35 – $8.95.

Adding a drink to your order will be an additional $2.15-$4.09. There is a selection of water, Gatorade, soda, Snapple, apple juice, RedBull and Naked juices.

Conlin mentioned that she always has flex left over each semester due to her not visiting The Grill as often. “The options that they give you, I just wouldn’t find myself buying on a daily basis,” she said.

If a student is heading into The Grill, it is to be expected that they will be not only using their meal swipe, but also their flex money as well.

So if you are looking for a meal, a drink and a snack, be prepared to spend double digits.

What do you say, is the price right for you?
