Everyone needs music in their life. Music brings joy, peace, enlightenment and happiness. There are platforms that give people the opportunity to listen to their favorite artists without a price. 

Spotify is a video streaming service, digital music and podcast all in one. It gives you the opportunity to stream hundreds of artists from all around the world. You can use Spotify on your mobile, desktop or tablet. You can play music for free, but you also have the choice to upgrade to Spotify premium.

Spotify’s plan includes all artists, albums and playlists. You are also able to share music with your friends, so you can discover the latest music together. You can play any playlist but only in shuffle play mode.

“I use Spotify to listen to Rod Wave, Lil Durk, Lil Baby and Drake,” Johnsey Hackney, a sophomore psychology major, said.

The platforms also give fans the chance to boost their favorite artists’ songs to win the number one spot. Also, it gives new artists the chance to be discovered.

Spotify has multiple features such as publishing analytics, Soundbetter, Canvas Profile tools, promo cards, shows with music, etc. Spotify features give artists tools to develop a fanbase and career. 

Artists can see the analytics on how their songs are performing, how they are being discovered and where their audience is located.

Spotify celebrates best new artist 2021 nominees that includes Doja Cat, D Smoke, CHIKA, Ingrid Andress, KAYTRANADA, Megan Thee Stallion, Noah Cyrus and Phoebe Bridgers. Some of these artists you may already know and some you may not be acquainted with.  

1) Doja Cat

Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, known professionally as Doja Cat, is an American singer, rapper, songwriter and record producer. Born and raised in Los Angeles, she began making and releasing music on SoundCloud as a teenager. She is already making the top of charts with her songs such as “Streets,” “Say so,” etc. she has already collaborated with Arianna Grande, City Girls, The Weeknd, Saweetie, etc. “Streets,” released in 2019 has made the top of the charts in 2021. It is a TikTok trend with fans using the song as the Silhouette challenge. She is a dance video muse and fashion curator. She has become Spotify’s 24th most-streamed artist of the year. 

2) D Smoke 

He was a California high school Spanish teacher skilled with instruments and languages. His rapping skills on his album “Black Habits” turned this poignant rhymer and advocate for Black excellence into a Spotify star. He got his recognition by winning the first season of the Netflix music competition show Rhythm & Flow in 2019.  

“He was amazing on the show and I knew from the start that he would win,” Siani Ross, freshmen business major, said.  

3) Megan Thee Stallion 

She is the definition of a hot girl with brains. The H-town savage is also an academic scholar studying health care administration. She gained attention when videos of her freestyling became popular on social media platforms such as Instagram. She has more than 2.78 billion streams and over 27 million monthly listeners on Spotify and now is up for a Best New Artist award. Her single “Savage” remix featuring Beyoncé and her feature on Cardi B’s single “WAP,” both released in 2020, each reached number one on the US Billboard hot 100 chart. 

Overall Spotify is a free platform that lets you discover new awesome music.
