Should pets be allowed on campus?

Many people on campus have some sort of pet in their dorm, whether it be a fish, hamster or even a guinea pig. Students know that pets are not allowed on campus unless it is a therapeutic animal. In that case it has to be registered with residence life.

In the beginning of the year I had an experience with a pet living in my room. My old roommate decided it would be a great idea to get a hamster. He said it would help get me girls in the room, so I let him have it for a few weeks. I am not going to lie, I hated having that little critter in the room and hearing it on the wheel at four in the morning. It did not even help with getting girls. It was just a waste of space in the room. Luckily, it is now gone and I have a room to myself. But, let’s stay on topic here.

My friend who goes to Providence College has had the same fish since the day he moved into college last year. Now, Providence RAs are not as strict as they are here so they do not really mind him having the fish in the room. Having a pet on campus seems to be a struggle from the things I hear. He says it is difficult when he goes away. He usually gives someone his door code and has someone feed the fish when he is away.

College kids are mostly on a budget and most of the time they do not have the money to pay for all of the necessary supplies. Adding in the cost for food, a cage or bowl and other accessories you want for your pet, it can add up and cost a lot of money.

I personally do not care if people have a pet on campus, I just do not want it in my room. Now, if someone has a dog or a cat or any animal that makes noise and smells then I would have a problem. I have two little yorkies at home and to be honest I love them but they are very annoying at times.

I think that people that need a therapeutic pet should be allowed to have a pet. I do not see any reason why someone should not be allowed to if they have a doctor’s note saying they need one. People may say it is unfair that they cannot have their pet on campus but some people can, but they do not understand that people have medical reasons to have it.

You can usually tell if a pet is registered or not by what kind of pet it is. People are not going to be that stupid and have a dog in their room for no reason, but people may have a fish or a hamster. There is a chance that they are just for enjoyment or to get girls to the room. So, if you ever go to a dorm or a house and someone has a dog or something of that nature on campus, do not be alarmed.
