Financial aid available for students applying to Catholic honor society

An honor society in college is an organization that recognizes academic and other forms of excellence among the students. There are a number of societies at Cabrini that recognize what students have been achieving. I’ll be talking about Delta Epsilon Sigma Honor Society.

Recently, Dr. Kimberly Boyd sent out an email that the fee to be in the Delta Xi chapter of the Delta Epsilon Sigma Honor Society at Cabrini University is $75.

“I don’t get why we have to pay for honor societies when we have to pay for school,” senior business analytics major Kostas Slikas said.

The question is why are students paying so much for honor societies?

Some students are on financial aid and can’t take $75 out of their pocket. The original price use to be $65, but Delta Epsilon has changed it to $75. The reason for the price increase was to help students on financial aid.

“Raise the price to lower the price,” Ray Ward said.

The extra $10 goes to the student success office. When a student cannot afford the $75 price, the center of student success will be able to help. The price will be reduced to $50 or $25, depending on need. When some students see that there is a fee to the honor societies they take a step back and think is it really worth it to spend $75?

The student success center is an academic support office at Cabrini. It offers a range of different types of resources to help students improve their learning skills. They have one-on-one support and help students in subjects that they may find difficult for them.

They would take it case by case. If a student applied and got accepted by an honor society but could not afford the cost, they could ask for financial aid.

“Don’t let money stop you for applying,” Ward said. He said the university would try to assist.

Delta Epsilon Sigma was founded in 1939 as a national scholastic honor society. It recognizes students, faculty and alumni of college universities with a Catholic tradition.

To be a part of Delta Epsilon Sigma students need to have  completed 18 credits and earned a GPA of at least 3.75 or higher.

The honor society recognizes students for their scholarship and commitment to social justice.
